Hey Guys,

If your just tuning in you may want to catch up on this two part blog by reading the post from earlier this week down below or by clicking Body Language Part I.

Today I’m going to talk about some body language signals you can learn to recognize in others and consciously use to change the way people perceive you (and stop fights before they happen).

Before we jump in let me explain the importance of this. Predators and bullies (two of the three types of attackers you will come across) almost always chose as their targets by singling out people who they don’t think will put up a fight (i.e. people giving off submissive body language signals).

The good news is there are some very simple steps you can take that will ensure you are perceived as an alpha male (someone they have no interest in messing with). These techniques will help keep you and your family safe, and the best part is you don’t have to get into a fight.

This is fight prevention at its best, and it doesn’t include backing out of a fight (bullies and predators simply won’t want to fight you). Enough chatter, let’s get into this stuff.

Non-Verbal/Body Language Signals That Will Convey Dominance and Stop Fights From Happening

  1. Neutralized expression:
    • This is most easily explained as a poker face. This doesn’t mean you can’t smile or show disapproval, but be in control. You should never indicate your emotions to someone unless you decide to do it consciously.
  2. Dominant Eye Movement:
    • When conversing with someone maintain eye contact while you are speaking and make less eye contact while they are speaking.
    • The ideal ratio is to look at a person’s eyes 55% of the time while you are talking and 45% of the time while they are talking. This conveys dominance (this is not the right ratio for friends or loved ones; this is strictly to convey dominance to an unfamiliar group or individual).
    • Also never look down after looking at someone looks at you, this is a submissive eye movement.
  3. Dominant Body Position:
    • Stand squared up to someone you are talking to. This means your feet and shoulders face them
    • Lean slightly in toward a person while talking and straighten while listening (when I say lean forward I don’t mean get into their face, this will cause not avoid a fight). The lean-in is subtle. For example if there is a chair between you and another person put a foot on the chair and while you are talking lean in resting your elbow on your raised knee, when he is talking straighten back up.
    • When talking to someone stand a little closer than you think is comfortable, an alpha male isn’t concerned with other people’s space (again this doesn’t mean getting into someone’s face, subtlety is crucial).
    • When you walk into a room pause for a minute and look around, check out the scene.
    • When you are sitting with a group of people don’t be afraid to rest your arm behind someone else at the booth, again alpha males aren’t afraid of taking up space.
  4. Dominant Posture:
    • This seems very similar to the body position except these are things you should do even if nobody is talking to you.
    • Keep your back straight and head forward while sitting or standing.
    • Think of a military posture. However you should not look tense, keep your shoulders relaxed (a shoulders-up posture indicates fear and anxiety…definitely not alpha male characteristics)

Wow…I thought I would be able to get through all of this stuff in one post, but apparently not. I’m only about half way through the list. I’m going to have to continue this into next week. Go ahead and try some of these tips this weekend. Not only will you be much less likely to get into a fight or be targeted by predators, but you should also notice a big difference in the way people interact with you (especially women…who are highly attracted to alpha males). Anyways try it out and come back for more tips next week.

Hey Guys,

Don’t know if you saw the Mayweather vs Ortiz fight on Saturday, but it was certainly one to remember. We could all see this fight getting dirty by round 4, but if you were watching carefully you could see that it started getting dirty a lot earlier.

Remember that post a while back about Mark Hatmaker’s dirty boxing secrets, well Ortiz was using this stuff all night. One of the most obvious spots was Ortiz’s aggressive use of his head whenever they tied up.

Everyone is talking about the totally obvious head butt in round 4 but my guess is that was just the last straw for Mayweather who had been putting up with Ortiz rough play inside all night. Mayweather played nice until Ortiz got a little over the top.

If you want to check out Ortiz’s subtle moves go back and watch a replay from about 1:15 left in round 2. You will see Ortiz banging his head against both sides of Mayweather’s head. Usually you will see boxers just use a little head tap on one side when they are tied up (to soften up their opponent) Ortiz went for both sides making it pretty obvious. I was surprised the referee Joe Cortez didn’t say anything about that one.

To Mayweather’s credit he continued to fight pretty clean until Ortiz made it clear he wanted a dirty fight with that head butt. You could almost watch Mayweather get serious after that. The funny part is the announcers had just talked a littler earlier about how Mayweather’s nickname should be the ‘Black-widow,’ because of his skills at deceit in the ring, and his ability to draw an opponent into his powerful shots. Speaking of deception this fight just goes to show that deception is not just a self defense tool on the streets it plays just as big of a role in controlled professional fights (the techniques are the only thing that changes).

I think we saw that play out in the ring. Mayweather casually went up to make nice with Ortiz who was presumably apologizing and then wham! Ortiz was left dazed and smiling adding one more KO to Mayweather’s perfect record. Mayweather was certainly playing at a different level than Ortiz and  the frustration Ortiz was feeling probably let to his dirty tactics. Mayweather was blocking or dodging his punches all night.

After that short but very exiting fight I’m definitely looking forward to seeing Mayweather in the ring again. I’m sure the questionable KO (the ref never actually told them the match was back on after the time out) will create quite a controversy and Mayweather is going to have to get back in the ring to show everyone he can win whatever fight his opponents bring (clean or dirty).

Oh and by the way if you didn’t have a chance to check out the fight (It’s worth watching even if you already heard what happened) you can see a free video of it by clicking the link on the Fightfast.com facebook page.

Learn how your body language can tell people “this is a guy I don’t want to mess with”.

Hey All,

Bob here with some more tips on how to keep you and your family safe.

This week I want to talk about body language. We’ve all heard about it, but few of us truly understand how powerful of a self defense tool it can be (body language is used by law enforcement and the military to develop ‘command presence’).

Few people understand the power of body language because most of us don’t consciously recognize the body language that we are subconsciously using and interpreting every day.

Get ready because this week that’s all going to change. The stuff I’m about to tell you is going to change the way you look at everyone you meet. You’ll instantly know if they are trying to dominate you, tell you they are submissive, and even if they are a ‘bully’ out looking for a fight.

Even better by knowing this stuff your going be able to use these tools consciously to let people know that you are a guy they don’t want to fight because within a couple hours of practicing this stuff you will be radiating confidence to everyone you meet.

Today I’m going to talk about how to read the body language of others. Then later next week I’ll teach you how to use body language to affect others.

Self Defense Body Language 101:

When you suspect a conflict is coming look for these cues. They will often be the first sign that a fight is imminent.

  1. A guy is arguing with you then suddenly becomes quiet:Getting quiet means he is probably engaged in an internal dialogue getting up the courage to hit you, or focusing too much on a target.
  2. A guy is arguing with you and suddenly looks away:Looking away is a subconscious distraction technique to get you to look where he is looking so he can hit you by surprise. He likely doesn’t know why he is looking away (it is almost always a subconscious move) but it is a great indicator.
  3. Staring at something other than your eyes:If a guy suddenly changes from looking at your eyes to someplace like your chin or nose while you are arguing that probably where he is aiming his first shot.
  4. A guy’s hands start to look a little shaky:He’s amping himself up for a fight. The shakes come from an adrenaline rush his body is creating to get ready to fight.
  5. If a guy pushes you or pokes you with his finger:This is almost always a sure sign that he is less than three seconds away from punching you.
You’re not going to de-escalate things from here, either throw the first punch or if you don’t want to fight him you’d better get running.

Okay so those are the big things to look for in others to give you the heads up that a fight may be on its way.

In the next post I’ll dissect some more everyday types of body language so that you can use it yourself and recognize it in other, in order to keep you or your family safe.

till next week…

Fighting From A Distance: Pepper Sprays Secret Advantage

TRS Special Project Coordinator Jim Curley here.

Got a little “fight” story for you.

Alright, guess it’s more of an “almost fight” story. But you’ll want to hear this anyway.

Here we go: A few years back I was at a gas station and ran into a little trouble.

You see, I was pumping gas into my big RAM pickup truck. It’s got an extended cab and an 8-foot bed, so it was a real beast to maneuver into tight places.

Turns out, (as I later discovered) I was accidentally blocking the exit path for folks who wanted to drive passed my gas pump.

I wasn’t even unaware of the problem — until a couple of big dudes in a beat-up Datsun pulled up right next to me and started screaming obscenities.

Whoa. I had NO idea what was going on or what it was all about, but I immediately checked to see if they had any visible weapons (they didn’t)…

…and then I calmly reached for something that was strapped on my side…

… my beeper.

Okay… it wasn’t really a beeper, it was pepper spray purposely designed to LOOK like a beeper.

The angry morons eventually backed up and peeled off, (not sure why they didn’t just ask me to move my truck like any other sane people would have done), so thankfully there was no bloodshed and I didn’t have to mace anyone.

But it was a significant moment.

Even though I’m just 5’9” and 165 pounds, I was able to remain confident, clear-headed, and unafraid, knowing that I could have easily stopped either one of these goons, even both of them, if things would have escalated.

And that’s my point. When possible, stop an opponent from a distance.

If you can avoid engaging in an actual hands-on struggle, it’ll be much safer for you and your family. But instead of using a gun, or a stick, or throwing rocks, (all viable options)…

… pepper spray allows you stop a threat from a distance without resorting to deadly means. Gives you room to either escape or, if need be, use some of your Fight-Fast skills to finish the fight.

Alright, sounds marvelous, but there’s a slight problem.

Even though pepper spray is a great way to stop your opponent without causing him serious permanent damage, there IS this issue of HOW to carry it.

I mean, let’s face it: MOST guys don’t want to go to a club, or into a business meeting, or on a date… with a can of pepper spray strapped to their side.

This was an issue for me.

While I’m probably more aware than most guys just how perfect pepper spray can be for defending yourself — I STILL didn’t want to carry it around.

Made me look paranoid.

Which was why I chose to purchase one that looked like a beeper.

Of course, beepers have been long ago replaced by cell phones… so I had to get rid of my fake beeper.

Pepper Spray Pen Image

People were asking too many questions. (“Why do you still have a beeper? I didn’t think they even offered the service any more? Where did you get that? Can I see it?)

So I moved onto another very clever way of carrying pepper spray…

… in a fake PEN.

That’s right, this is cool. And I recommend it to everyone who wants to be armed with a smartly disguised non-lethal and highly effective weapon.

This little baby will get the job done.

I recommend this product. It’s called the “Pepper Pen”, (by Pepper Shot) and the powerful pepper formula will stop an opponent very quickly… without them suspecting a thing.

The Pepper Pen is a convenient and subtle way to carry the protection you need into any environment… restaurant, bar, business meeting, sporting event… without drawing unwanted attention.

The low key package houses a powerful self protection pepper delivery system and unleashes a generous stream of intensely hot OC Pepper Spray.

The unit holds 10 grams (enough for 5 one-second bursts) and sprays up to 6 feet. The pen clip easily attaches to pocket or you can keep in a purse.

The beauty is that it looks so non threatening (it’s a pen for Pete’s sake), so it won’t arouse suspicion until it’s simply too late for them.

The non-toxic dye will also help aid the police in identifying your attacker, (or at least just make them look like part of the “Blue Man Crew” for a week).

At just $9.95, it’s tough to go wrong with this product.

(NOTE: Pepper Sprays cannot be shipped to New York, Massachusetts, Michigan or Wisconsin.)

So if you’re interested in a stealthy way to be armed against ANYONE (because nobody can “tough out” pepper spray), this is a smart move.

For a safer life…

Why Is Deception The Key To Defeating An Attacker?

From childhood on we are taught to be honest, polite, and to never hit first. This may be good advice for a small child, but if you still bring these ideals into the adult world of self defense you are putting yourself and your loved ones in danger.

The Fair Fight Is The Most Dangerous Deception

The whole ‘put up your dukes and have a fair fight’ is one of the biggest misconceptions about fighting and it gets people hurt. The only time you should be aiming for a fair fight is if you and your buddies decide to do a little backyard boxing or something like that (controlled environment).

If you are not in a controlled environment you are in a no rules street fight. There is no half way. You are either fighting recreationally in a controlled environment or you are in a life or death fight.

Once you understand this crucial point you can easily see why the over romanticized ‘put up your dukes’ kind of fight will get you hurt. In a street fight or self defense situation it is your sole job to defeat the attacker with whatever means are necessary. You do not stop until it is totally safe for you to flee the scene (you must decide what level of force is required).

The good news is… using deception can quickly boost your odds of winning a conflict.

4 Deceptive Self Defense Techniques

  1. If you feel a conflict is eminent deceive your would be attacker into thinking you don’t want to fight then strike him first while he is not expecting it (the first person to hit is most likely to win).
  2. Tell a guy who is intent on fighting you (once you realize there is no walking away) that you want to take it outside-once he starts walking towards the door attack him. There is no fair there is only a winner and a loser
  3. Notice your attackers deceptive technique-we are all hardwired to deceive in these situations-he will often look off to one side of you right before he punches hoping you will look where he is looking and not see his right haymaker coming. Turn this against him by throwing in a quick jab.
  4. Use the look off to the side technique on your attacker-it is a much more powerful tool if you use it consciously because you can keep him in your peripheral vision and watch for a strike.

This is just a short list of the deceptive techniques that can give you the upper hand a fight. These are self defense techniques that you must incorporate into your training. Self defense training is not all about focus mitts and heavy bags. The mental side of self defense is equally important. You can have the hardest hitting punches in the world, but if you are deceived and struck first you will likely lose the fight.

Remember, you cannot afford to lose a street fight. Your job is to survive the fight by using any and all tools at your disposal so don’t ignore this powerful mental tools.
