South Carolina Sheriff Urges Citizens to Get Concealed Carry License

I’m talking the news conference earlier this week where South Carolina Sheriff by Chuck Wright urged citizens to get a concealed weapons permit to protect themselves. Apparently it was in response to an attempted rape by a man with a long criminal rap sheet.

Wright was clearly frustrated with the “revolving door” justice system that puts good citizens in danger by releasing dangerous suspects with violent histories.

He also made it clear that police officers cannot be everywhere all the time and even went as far as to suggest that the best protection was to carry a concealed weapon.

This story hits on a larger self defense issue which I have been talking about for a long time. Yes police are here to protect and serve, but your safety is your own responsibility.

Expecting police to heroically “ride to rescue” when you’re in trouble is a big mistake. Cops most often come in the ‘mop up’ and take notes after a crime has been committed.

What else can they do?

It’s impossible for the police to be around every corner. Which means it’s their presence that deters criminals. They CAN intervene if they are lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time, but that’s unlikely.

So what does this mean for you?

Well, just this: If you really want to be safe you must be willing to take action to save your own skin.

Of course I’m talking about self defense, (key word there being “self”).

The sheriff in this story is a big proponent of carrying a concealed gun. That’s great but I know there are a lot of people out there who don’t have a gun, have a gun but not a concealed weapons permit, or simply don’t want a gun.

Don’t worry you don’t have to carry a weapon to be safe. As the saying goes there’s more than one way to skin a cat.

I’ve written a lot about self defense in older posts so I’m not going to rehash what makes a good self defense program, or how you should learn self defense.

If you are interested in that, check out the blog archives on the right hand sidebar.

To be honest what worries me more than being caught without a gun is being attacked by a person who DOES have a gun. Carrying a gun is great until someone pulls out their gun before you can get to yours. Now that is a bad situation. If you try to pull your gun he is going to shoot (which is exactly what you would do if the situation was reversed).

So what do you do if a guy pulls a gun on you or sneaks up on you with a gun?

Well if he just wants your wallet you should probably give it to him. If he wants the keys to your car you should probably give those to him too. But there are a lot of things you probably would not give him, like say your wife or girlfriend, or a child.

You also probably wouldn’t want him to take you hostage, or force you to get into a car, or any number of other scenarios where you would be losing something much more valuable than money.

This is the really scary stuff we don’t like to think about. But believe it or not there is something you can do if someone pulls a gun on you.

Would you believe me if I told you that I know a guy who cannot get shot?

Yep, that’s right. I tried it myself. Couldn’t shoot em.

He’s that quick.

And not just quick, he is a skilled weapons control expert. He spent years perfecting gun disarming techniques for all sorts of guns (single action pistols, dual action pistols, rifles, shotguns, sub-machine guns, even sawed off shot guns).

As the story goes he and a friend got into a big argument about how to disarm someone holding you up with a pistol. They had both learned different techniques which they swore by.

The argument got so out of hand they decided the only way to figure out who was right was to try to shoot each other before the other guy could take control of the weapon.

So they made some wax bullets and laid it all on the line (this isn’t some ‘bs’ story either, I saw the scars from the wax bullets).

Anyways to make a long story short they both got shot. Both techniques were dead wrong. That’s when their experiments began.

Hundreds of wax bullets later they had done it (unfortunately for them “Simunition” rounds had yet to be invented). They figured out the exact techniques to redirect then take control of nearly every type of gun known to man without getting shot.

This was no easy feat.

With so many different types of weapons out there this took years. They had to get up every morning knowing that they were going to be pelted time after time with wax bullets (which usually draw blood and leave a pretty sizable bruise). We’re talking about true dedication.

Still don’t believe me?

Well, I couldn’t believe it either until he literally snatched a sawed off shotgun right out of my hands (keep in mind that I am at least 8 inches taller than him) and completely avoided the 1 shot I managed to get off before he took control of the weapon.

If that’s not proof I don’t know what is.

In short this is the real deal. His name is Bob Taylor and he is willing to teach it all to you too. This is serious stuff and there is no other weapon control system like it.

If you want to find out exactly how this system works click here.

Okay so back to our original topic. Carrying a gun is great but even if you are carrying a gun a criminal can still catch you off guard rendering you weapon useless and often times making the situation worse.

The criminal can easily take control of your weapon after he has control of you.

Just remember that police officers (with hours upon hours of firearms training) are shot more often with their own gun (taken by a criminal) than by a criminal’s own gun. So while carrying a gun sounds great it doesn’t make you superman.

If you really want to make sure you are safe you need to not only know how to use self defense skills in a hand to hand situation, but you also need to know how to disarm a gun wielding criminal who is threatening your life.
