Jim West’s Two Block Hammer Shot

Don’t Be Pushed Around

When it comes to protecting yourself and your family, you simply can’t afford to be pushed out of the game. The technique we’re showcasing today is a quick and easy to learn defense against an attacker who thinks he can push you around.

Breaking It Down

Remember folks, a push is an aggressive move that is usually followed up with a strike. Attackers love to get their targets on their heels before they start pummeling them with punches.

The best thing you can do is be aware at all times, never letting a guy push you in the first place, but in the real world things get messy and you won’t always be ready for an attack.

However, by training yourself to instinctively drop back into your “crash position” and spring forward after a push, you’ll quickly be able to turn the tables on an attacker who thought he could get you on your heels and wind up for a looping right hand shot.

The Elbow Strike

After you spring back, you want to drive your elbow straight forward, jamming it into the inside of his shoulder with all your body weight. This does two things:

  • First, it’s pretty painful (lots of delicate nerves in that area).
  • Second, it will stop him dead in his tracks.

You don’t stop there. As you know from my other posts you have to follow up with a barrage of strikes to convince him that he’s picked the wrong guy or gal to mess with.

What makes the elbow push block so great is that it naturally leads to several very effective and very painful counter strikes.

The Hammer Shot

As you saw in the video, you can make your hand into a fist and drop it down onto his head and collar bone. Remember this is one fluid motion. Your hammer shot will drop onto his head and glance off downward into his collar bone or sometimes onto his face and sternum depending on the exact situation.

The key is that you have to drive and pull your hammer shot downward. You aren’t striking his head, you are driving through it. If you don’t have this mentality you’ll simply give him a bump on the head.

Instead, you want to really drop your whole body into the hammer shot like you are swinging a sledge hammer. If you do use all your weight and you land directly on the collar bone it will break even if you are a 110 pound woman. The collar bone simply isn’t that strong.

I recommend practicing this self-defense combo with some focus mitts so you can go “full tilt” and really feel yourself dropping all your weight into it.

Keep Your Guard Up

Last but not least, remember to keep your other arm and hand up to protect your face. As Jim West explains just after this segment he is dropping his arm so he can talk to the camera. You must protect your head in a real life situation. Always remember to keep your hands up while practicing this or you’ll forget it when a real self-defense situation occurs.

  1. Jim West is awesome! This “two-block hammer shot” and “elbow push” will work as a great offensive or defensive. For example, if you’ve been punched in the face and the attacker won’t stop, these two moves can quickly reverse the game. Jim West material is something every smart tactical instructor should ad to training library.

  5. Things happen all the time, when your in denile that’s when you lose.If you don’t plan for worst, and the worst suddenly happens your hit. PLAN, PRACTICE, & SURVIVE

  6. Thanks, so much, for what you are supplying! – This rotten old world is just getting worse & worse, and the Police are usually far, far to busy to respond in time…even IF you had time to call! – It’s far more likely to be a ‘you & them!’ situation, so I greatly appreciate all of your generous and practical help! – Especially as my Families & I are ‘short-of’ cash!! — Also, these days- some attackers can be adolescent bullies, ruthless youths, or even older children are ready to attack what looks like an ‘easy-enough’ target… to rob, or whatever! – Thanks again! 🙂 – J.

  7. Hey guys this is Jim West. I first would like to thank you for your comments. I am 60 years old now and learned a lot both in the ring and about 25 years of street fighting. Now days I make every effort to avoid fighting, however, I still train and consult. Also I have a tell all book coming out next year, my memoirs from military and civilian life.As I get older I have been refining my techniques to what works in close. I have also spent a lot of time working on a fighters intuition. How to recognize and avoid conflict and how to engage when you have a motivated attacker. As our econmoy fails and we witness the erosion of our middle class, crime is on the rise. It is time to stay prepared through training and practice. The more real world the better. If I can answer any specific question please ask.

  8. I just got back from training with Jim West. Jim is indeed the Real Deal. I met Jim several months ago, and he started training me. I have over 2 decades of training in Jujutsu & Military Combatives, if your looking for real World training, I would HIGHLY recommend Jim’s material, very, and I mean VERY few people have the street experience, and Military experience Jim bring’s to the table.

  9. I’ve got a few of your cds you can tell Jim West is the real deal, moves like this so seemingly simple are great if you practise and use them properly. It makes the difference of getting your ass whupped or walking away and I’d rather walk. I love you guys cause you put real stuff out, kids these days watch the movies and the supposed Hollywierd badass, where as Mr. West is a real life badass, and they think you do all that dancing and the bad guys all fall down. Where as you teach real moves, maybe if you put it on a video game they’d learn. Anyways thank you guys at TRS I’ve taught mine some real moves you guys show, it can make the difference.

  10. I love the crash ! This one in particular I’m following up with the open hand slap and the foot sweep at the same time . So it’s crash with the left slap with the right trip sweep with the right foot down he goes step on neck

  11. I actually have the video this technique is from. It’s just one of the great moves Jim displays on that vid.

  12. Okay.. You got my attention. So what about fast jab, south paw, and cage fighters. I want to end the fight fast..

  13. i really love your vidios keep em coming ill never get sick of watching em thank you all for the lessons.

  14. Good V ideo, but you don’t mention anything about the attacker using his feet during the attack while your getting his gift from you.

  15. Another very good instructional video clip first time I’ve ever seen this one also can be very brutal which I like and he shows you how to do the most damage very quick and ended quickly I’d hate to have to try and defend against it

  16. I like these tips. But what can i do to train myself better. The air dont fight back. I have no one to run these exercises with. But that won’t stop me from doing them. So thanks to all yall.

  17. This A great move to learn. This can also be done in.an elevator or to keep your adversary off Ballence or on wheels This move along with all the other moves need to be practiced on a regular basis other wise you will you will get rusty.

  18. 😂We can’t escape from a Boxer, the Elbow Block is only the act to hide a Face when standing yet…😍Must step back and hit Him Legs few times and then proceeds His Head…This swaying hands can be gained only on a Ring to be Prepared…😁

  19. M’dad taught me not to fight, but to take the other guy OUT, ASAP, starting when I was 4. The principles he taught me have never failed in over six decades. Never brag. Never bluff. NEVER TELEGRAPH!!! Nobody has the right to start it. Everybody has the responsibility to finish it. It is finished when you can turn your back and walk away. When you strike, aim for 10 feet on the other side of him. Never trust that he DOESN’T have buddies ready to pile in; be aware of and ready for them. What you are teaching is refinement of the basics I learned. GOOD STUFF!
