The Secret To Hitting Hard At Close Range

The Physics of Striking

Most people have heard someone say they need to “throw their weight” into a punch or strike, but few people truly understand how to do this. There are a number of ways to explain this concept. In the following video, self-defense expert Richard Ryan gives you the explanation he uses with his students. When you understand this concept and practice it, you will be able to generate a lot of force even in very close range.

Breaking It Down

As you saw in the video above, the key to this technique is moving your body explosively (even if it is a very short distance) in the direction of the target.

With your body moving explosively in the direction of the attacker, you now throw your punch, elbow, headbutt, or nearly any other technique and will be able to cause much more damage. With this technique, a close range punch turns into a battering ram that nobody will expect.

To top it off, you don’t have to be large to make this work. In fact, a 110 pound woman can easily knock out a larger man using this technique.

When you learn to use your body weight in striking, all your techniques will be amplified, and when you learn to develop power even in close range, you will become a very dangerous person.

Most attackers, especially big guys, rely on mass transfer while standing up straight and in punching distance. They often don’t know what to do when you get in close, this is where those who understand this principle gain a serious advantage.

  1. Great job. Never give the attacker anything except a reason for them to run, not you. What about weapon or knife?

  2. Looks almost easy but I don’t know. I don’t have much strength and I’m definitely not a big person by any means. But I will give it a try and work on it until I feel comfortable enough with it. I just gotta find someone who’s willing to let me pound on them for a while. Just kidding.

  3. Thank you for your great tips. I’ve purchased many of your self defense weapons and instruction manuals over the years. As a single woman, it’s essential to have some things that can level the field against an attacker. Could you possibly share some strategies and or weapons that best deal with big and aggressive pit bull attacks? Such as best protective gloves and anything else besides a gun that may be best to stop an attack and protect my little dog?

There’s some attacks and ongoing issues in my neighborhood and while I carry a taser from you and a knife, I imagine it’s not sufficient. Love your work and will be a loyal customer for a long time to come. Thanks again.
