Soldier on Train Takes Out Thugs With His Kukri

Many times a violent conflict can be avoided if you learn to let it go and not let your ego take over.  Give the thugs your wallet instead of your wallet AND your life.  Sometimes it’s just not worth the fight and potential consequences (injury, death, lawsuits, lawyer fees to prove your innocence, etc.).

This was definitely NOT the case on a train that was going from Nepal to Gorakhpur on September 2, 2010.  This train just so happened to be carrying Bishnu Shrestha, a retired Gurkha soldier in the Indian Army.

Halfway through his trip, the train came to a screeching halt and picked up a gang of thugs.  When the train robbers got to him, he sat quietly and handed over his wallet.  When they decided to gang-rape an 18-year-old girl, he couldn’t sit in silence anymore.  He lept into action drawing his kukri (a weapon all Gurkha soldiers carry) and took out the would-be rapists.

The Kukri

The kukri (khukuri), or “Gurkha knife”, can be used as a tool and is the primary weapon-of-choice for many South Asian military units.  It can measure anywhere from 15-18 inches and works like a machete on steroids.

Bishnu used his trusty kukri to kill 3 bandits and injure 6-8 more.  What remained of the original 40 dropped their loot and ran.  Bishnu sustained a deep cut to his left forearm, but was able to receive medical treatment.

The authorities recovered 200 cell phones, 40 laptops, “a significant amount” of jewelry, and about $10,000 in cash.  The family of the woman he saved offered him a large amount of money for saving their daughter, but he refused.  He said, “Fighting the enemy in battle is my duty as a soldier.  Taking on the thugs on the train was my duty as a human being.”  After his recovery, Bishnu Shrestha was awarded the Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak medal and the Sena Medal for his bravery.

Things that we can take away from this story:

  • Assess the situation.  If the risk is greater than the reward (i.e. your life), DO NOT engage.
  • Weapons require training.  Train with a practice knife with guidance from experts first.
  • Having a weapon that you’ve been trained with is MUCH more effective than being unarmed when the SHTF.

Bishnu trained for 15 years with his kukri.  He still walked away injured, but saving a young woman’s life outweighed the risk of fighting.  And who knows?  Maybe he saved the lives of many more passengers aboard the train that day.  Thankfully we will never know.

  1. Gorkhas are one of the fiercest fighters and well known for their skills so much so that Royal British Army utilized these born warriors with great results.
Khukri is better than a machete and knife.

  2. It is a good thing this didn’t happen in America, the ex soldier would have been arrested for yielding a weapon and the thugs would have been compensated for their injuries and advocates against the kukri would have wanted it banned. If the attackers were muslims the rape would not be prosecuted because it is a muslim right to rape whom they please under the sharia law, including gang raping little boys and blessed by allah ( a made up god ,one of 600 that mohammed forced his people to accept and make him their prophet). I pray for a quick recovery for the soldier and a lesson learned by the thugs.

  3. Brilliant story makes all the training worthwhile when you can save a young lady from gang of thugs thank you

  4. I agree!! I have mine hanging by my front door. It so precisely balanced and razor sharp.. I would rather not use it to defend my house and property , but, if necessary I would not hesitate.
At least the “Anti-Gun” nuts would have nothing to say , except register the Kukri. It does not make any noise, and does not need cartridges.

  5. Gurkha aren’t big guys. But as warriors, they can be compared to wolverines. A wolverine is not very large, but even a full grown grizzly bear will avoid fighting one of them. Brits made a great choice long ago recognizing the Gurkha warfighting skills and having them as allies.

  6. I am so happy that I found out about FightFast. I have ordered serval times. I have not been disappointed as of yet.

  7. I have a close friend who knows this man. He served with him in the Ghurkha’s. The story given does not tell the whole truth. The girl being raped received a cut on her neck because Bishnu cleaved the head from the rapist and subsequently cut the girl as he decapitated the assailant. He then continued fighting, severely injuring 8 others and killing two more bandits before being wounded himself. His determined defence struck terror amongst the cowardly bandits who fled in fear. He is an example of how men should be – not what they are today. Men do not hurt women or children, they should protect them from all harm. I wonder where the men are today?
