Bushcraft or BS: Collecting Rain in Water Bottles

This is a great tip. It’s a pretty simple concept, collect water in empty water bottles. What makes this special is slitting and fanning out the sides of the bottle to maximize the surface area. Check it out:

Ok, let’s go over the pros and cons:

Pro: It’s easy to set up. All you need is a knife, some plastic bottles found almost anywhere, and a place to bury the tops. It also doesn’t take very long to make one (about 2 minutes per bottle).

Con: If you’re set-up is in a storm, they could blow away easily. I’d say how you bury/anchor them should be determined by what kind of storm you are dealing with (common sense).

Pro: They collect a substantial amount of water in a short amount of time. That mean this is not just a parlor trick, but an actual life saving method.

While this is an exceedingly simple tip (you could think this up on your own), in a stressful situation, it can be difficult to problem solve. Now that you’ve seen this tip, you are pretty much guaranteed to remember it if you ever do find yourself in a survival situation.
